When the Ground Shifts Beneath You

  • Why the belief that there's nothing out there is keeping you stuck

  • What showing up differently looks like

  • Three micro-moves to choose from

If you're struggling right now, I want you to know—I see you. I see how hard this is.

What I'm Noticing

I want to start by acknowledging what might be true for you (if not for you, then for someone you know) — and that is, if you're struggling with your professional situation right now, it probably feels like you're drowning. And I need you to know that struggling doesn't mean you're not strong enough. It means you're carrying something heavy, and it's okay to feel the weight of it.

Layoffs. Losing jobs they thought were secure. Missing promotions they'd been promised. Sitting in toxic environments, wondering how much longer they can hold their breath. Parents and caregivers stretched so thin between work and family that they can't remember the last time they felt like themselves.

And underneath it all, there's this quiet panic. This fear that maybe there isn't anything better out there. That maybe this is just how it is now.

I had a conversation last week that sounded like this: "Laura, I've been applying everywhere, and it feels like I'm shouting into a void. What if there's just nothing out there for me?" And I felt that. I felt the weight of it. The exhaustion of showing up every day, doing what you know how to do, when you can't see what's coming next.

So many of us are in this in-between space right now. The ground has shifted, and we're trying to find our footing while also questioning if there's even solid ground to land on.

What's Even Possible?

The scarcity you're feeling? It's real. Palpable. The struggle is real. The challenge of this moment is real. But the belief that there's nothing out there for you? That's a story that'll keep you stuck.

The people who are landing in aligned roles, who are finding opportunities that fit their lives, who are stepping into work that feels like it matters? They're not more qualified than you. They're not luckier than you. They're just showing up differently.

They're being clear about what they're actually looking for (in plain English, not fancy terms, but real, honest language). They're showing up aligned with their values, not performing the way they think they need to. They're approaching the search with an energy that says, "I'm looking for the right fit" instead of "please, anyone, hire me."

And I get it (because I have BEEN THERE - more often than I care to admit) when you're in survival mode, when the bills are piling up, when you've been rejected seventeen times, positivity feels impossible. But every application sent from a place of desperation sounds desperate. Every interview approached from scarcity reads as scarcity. The energy you bring creates the response you get.

What if this transition isn't happening to you, but for you? What if this moment of uncertainty is actually creating space for something that's been trying to reach you? What if the fact that nothing has worked out yet means you haven't found your thing yet, not that there's nothing out there?

The opportunities exist. But they're drawn to people who know what they're looking for and believe in their innate worth.

Micro-Moves

This week, I'm inviting you to choose ONE of these micro-moves. Not all three. Just the one that feels most true for you right now.

If you're feeling scattered: Take fifteen minutes and write down what you actually want. Not what sounds impressive. Not what you think you should want. What would make you excited to wake up on a Monday morning? What kind of environment do you thrive in? What matters to you now that maybe didn't matter five years ago? Get clear so you can recognize it when it shows up.

If you're feeling desperate: Before your next application or conversation, pause and ask yourself: Am I presenting myself as someone seeking the right fit, or as someone begging to be chosen? What would change if I believe I have something immeasurably valuable to offer (because you do!!)? How would I present myself differently if I knew there were going to be 10 other opportunities right behind this one? Bolder? Stronger?

If you're feeling alone in this: Reach out to one person in your network—not to ask for a job, but to have a real conversation. Share what you're looking for. Ask what they're seeing in their world. Let yourself be seen in transition, rather than hiding until you have everything figured out. Connection creates possibility.

We're in this together. And you don't have to have it all figured out to take the next right step.

With deep belief in your magnificence,

Laura

P.S. I turned 43 this week! In two decades, I had never taken off on my birthday – so this was a first – I treated myself to lunch, a massage, and an afternoon with one of my favorite humans.

To top it off, the boys surprised me with my favorite cake, lots of chocolate, and homemade cards. While it might feel shaky out there, we can find and create peaceful, joyful, homes not just for us but for our loved ones. We get to be the change we wish to see in the world. Peace, joy, and love to you! Thanks for being part of my community!
